Various Roads Lead To Merantix

Dr. Jonas Probst

Machine Intelligence Engineer | Trading Technologies

I studied physics and mathematics at the TU Munich, Cambridge, and the ENS Paris before doing my PhD in Theoretical Physics at Oxford, where I conducted research on String Theory. I gained work experience at an e-commerce start-up and as a quant at Barclays Investment Bank.

Towards the end of my doctorate I realized that I wanted to apply my mathematical and modelling skills outside of academia on real-world problems and in a dynamic environment, ideally whilst still being close to research. I became more and more interested in deep learning, which promised to tick all the boxes, and found out about Merantix from a friend, who praised it as one of the most serious and interesting AI companies in Europe. I really liked the team as well as the diverse and research-oriented work at Merantix and decided to join as a Machine Intelligence Engineer.

I have mainly been working on our Trading Technology venture, which builds and develops intelligent models that predict and monetize on short-term market movements. Merantix’s company culture is open, cooperative, and fun, and we often go out to one of the many restaurants, bars, and parks that Berlin has to offer.

Dr. Christian Leibig

Machine Intelligence Engineer | Medical Imaging

Before joining Merantix, I studied, researched and worked in physics, neural information processing and machine learning, both for academia and industry. The aesthetics of physics lies in often creative ways of simplifying complex problems. Neural information processing systems provide a wealth of complex problems to tackle. Building artificial neural networks in code enables understanding and is therefore a truly fascinating endeavor.

I heard about Merantix through a former colleague of mine and intially contacted Merantix out of pure curiosity and for potential collaborations for my own projects. When I met these highly skilled people working closely together on a diverse array of topics, I changed my original plans and decided to join them. For me, it was about the right mix of professional software engineering and state-of-the-art deep learning applied to real-world problems.

As a machine intelligence engineer at Merantix I contribute to and profit from shared infrastructure and knowledge, that is in terms of software and model development as well as ideas. Most of my time I spend on the healthcare venture, aiming to improve the efficiency and accuracy of diagnostics and hopefully also therapeutics in the future.

Both Merantix and Berlin may be described in similar terms. People are very energetic, they come from many different countries and therefore provide a great cultural mix. Both within Merantix and Berlin there are great people to meet and hang out with. I think this diversity is particularly important for technology-oriented ventures.

Business Development | Healthcare

Before joining Merantix, I did my MBA at the Harvard Business School in Boston. I have previously worked at the Boston Consulting Group in Munich for 2 years in their core health care team, specializing on health care around the world, where I have worked for multiple medical technology and pharmaceutical companies in Tokyo, Miami, Latin America, London, and Germany. Between my first year and second year at Harvard, I worked for Apple Inc. in California, where I was working on a strategy project in their retail and educations team. Prior to that, I did my undergrad in International Economics at Bocconi University in Milan and Dartmouth, NH and my master’s degree at HEC Paris and The University of Tokyo.

I originally visited Merantix on an organized Harvard trip to explore the tech scene in Berlin and was deeply impressed by the Merantix team and culture. It is a very international, collaborative and fun work environment – where people are incredibly supportive of each other and eager to make the technology and the commercialization work. At Merantix I am working on the healthcare project, more specifically focusing on medium to long-term strategy.

Merantix is proactive in making major contributions to the open-source community. We encourage all of our employees to regularly attend professional conferences. Merantix is a regular guest at notable academic conferences on machine learning such as NIPS, ICCV, ICLR and ECCV. At the ECCV event this September, we will host an Italian Night with great food where you will be able to get in touch with all of us.

Work-Life Balance

Merantix offers a dynamic and flexible work environment. Some of us come in during “regular” business hours, and some prefer to start later or earlier. Our employees have the freedom to work when it best suits them. We are a fully trust-based organization that does not track vacation time. We believe in ownership of work, personal responsibility, and the motivation of our people, which has proven to be a successful approach to leadership

Collaborative Culture

Merantix is a family of diverse people from all over the world that came to Berlin to work on machine learning. We truly care about the individual well-being of our employees and support all of our new employees who are joining us in Berlin with whatever they may need. We have regular offsites and encourage everyone to organize common activities; just join the “all-sports” slack channel and stay up-to-date on bouldering, swimming, running, and much more.
